Ella – Rawana falls are a great afternoon snack

Leaving Ella rock top, we choose to take the long and winding
road down the mountain. Feeling almost lost, we arrive 30
minutes later at the point where we started. A short Coke
break and a quick check if any leeches were eager to connect
with us. The results: 5 leeaches attached to our shoes and
one still dancing not yet attaching to my finger, therefore
easy to get rid of. The lady selling us the Coke gave us
directions for an afternoon snack, the Rawana falls. From
where we started we could see the top of the water mass
getting ready for a nice jump down the rocks. When arriving
Ella by bus, the falls can be admired from the bottom. Time
to see the middle part. A nice little old man helped us, for
a small contribution of course, to get down the slippery
muddy rocky trail. First step is for me and my fear of
falling already a big step conquered. A step on the slippery
shakey tree spanning over the quick flowing river, maybe 1,5
meter. That is a big task for me. I looked fear in the eyes,
a hand of the guide got me there. Next step the sliding part.
Fun! Through banana tree forrest. Huge trees actually, 3
maybe 4 times my height. Then the falls lure through the
trees. Continue going down, we get a clear view of the falls
from a distance, showing its power. Then the last hundreds of
meters, when the trail ends at the middle level of the falls,
also the part where the falls are at its widest. We get so
close that taking a shower is possible. What an amazing spot
to stand. Feeling small, feeling happy. Feeling thankful to
be able to stand here. What a great afternoon snack. Getting
back over the rails back to town, seems to go much faster. A
lion lager awaits….
